Sometimes it just happens – a mixture of individuals who interact in productive way to achieve a common goal. Differences in a group become assets, the energy level is high and one is able to find a way of helping and inspiring each other. Yet it is far more common that things do not turn out this way – a number of people are assigned to work towards a common goal but are unable to benefit from the diversity within the group. They are unable to share a common view on how to collaborate or to inspire and help each other move forward. Instead, the energy level drops and substantial conflicts often occur, which significantly impacts the productivity and the achievement of the group’s results.
The effects can be fatal, for both the organization and the individuals on the team. There are good reasons for not leaving the development of a team to chance, and there are good reasons for using a more purposeful process to lead a team through pitfalls, which although common can be minimized.
